Local Sports in Sligo
Gaelic games, the traditional Irish sports, include Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and handball. These games are played country-wide within every community and are integral to Irish culture. The games are played on a local and national level and it is worth going to see a match or two while you are visiting the area.
Gaelic football has strong roots in the Hoey household, with Mattie featuring on the 1975 Sligo Connaught Champions team. After a 33 year drought, Sligo did us proud in 2007 and recaptured the title as Connaught Champions and brought home the Nestor Cup once again. The official grounds for the Sligo team is Markievicz Park , approx. 20 minute drive from Rowanville Lodge. Locally, the club St. Molaise Gaels play their home games only 2 minutes from Rowanville Lodge at Monsignor Hynes Park . Please feel free to enquire about match fixtures and venues during your stay.
